It sounds like the W12 engine will become reality. This is an engine with 3 banks of 4 cylinders. Originally it was designed to be 4.8L and the output was 354 HP. Sadly no torque figures were ever disclosed.... max. power at 6300 RPM sounds very interesting.
Audi is also working on a super efficient Diesel engine... but it will probably never make it to the US.

Just a correction to my previous post:
The 12 cylinder engine (if it will be the W12) has:
Bore 81 mm
Stroke 77.4 mm
Compression 10.5:1
354HP at 6300 RPM
480Nm torque
... 360Nm at idle WOW!
Peak torque at 3500 RPM.
.... let's keep our fingers crossed!

I will try and to get more information. I have a connection, actually a corporate lawyer, within Audi and I'll call him to find out.

I recently learned that there is another factor involved in the W12 development:
VW is going to provide this engine on the Rolls Royce as well! As soon as BMW passes it on to VW.

The twelve is supposed to be shared with VW D1…
The D1 is a steel-bodied derivative of the next-gen A8 component set. It'll be built at an all new, glass-walled plant in Dresden.
I don't think the North American market is ready fro a $75K VW… at least not 5000 per year. (that's the CPV for the NA market D1)

Re: What if BMW doesn't pass it to VAG?
That is the agreement I believe...
RR is not so productive for BMW, just like Rover they will cut it off soon. What scares me is the Ford rumor (buying BMW).
