at idle RPMs ~920-950 or so. When gear engaged, they seem to drop to ~870-900. Why?

Default Is this a higher idle speed than normal?

US market A8s and S8s -- all with V8 engines -- should idle somewhere between 650 and 820 rpm, depending on which engine is in the car. What's yours?

The troubleshooting procedures in the service manual depend on whether the idle speed is controlled by an Idle Air Control valve or by a drive-by-wire throttle.
