Information about Cold Starts/Warm-ups please;
Hi All!
Can anyone here please point me towards a conclusive article/research regarding the effects of cold starts/warm-ups and the pros and cons of letting the car first sit there for 10 minutes on a cold morning before driving.
It is my understanding that there is a degree of detriment in even that old adage, versus driving the car immediately at a moderate speed (being careful not to over-rev) versus even just starting the car and LIGHTLY "bobbing" the gas (in order to aid in the effective combustion of all gas mixes...)
Interested to know how opinions vary for a carburated vehicle, versus a 10-year old EFI vehicle versus, say my S8...?
Has the technology changed or the methodology on this issue?
AoA is now doing 10K miles between oil changes (much to Jiffy Lube's dismay - I'm sure) so even the ol' "3K oil change like a clock" is no longer standing on their own vehicles...

The driver's manual for my '99 A8 says >not< to let the car sit there while it warms up, but to drive it at moderate speeds until it reaches operating temperature. I recall reading that the engine reaches operating temperature much more rapidly while being driven, and I assume that the less time the engine spends running cold the less wear there will be. FWIW

Very good information here

Check out the section:
"So how often should I change my oil?"
Some very good answers why you should never let the car warm up idling.<ul><li><a href="http://www.fernblatt.com/longhurst/engineoil_bible.html">The Engine Oil Bible</a></li></ul>
