Mine does the same thing on rear passenger side door only or may be both rears? Never had time to check it out and forgot all about it. One of these days... :-)

Cheers,

Each door has a switch that turns the lights on when opened. You may have corrosion or a short in the switch or in the wiring to the switch. There is a relay that shuts the lights off some time after the doors are closed. My first guess is the door switch is corroded or damaged so that it is sticking part way in its moving out (little spring inside) when the door is opened and the relay doesn't get the correct signal.

I'm stumped.

All my earlier Audis have a plunger-style switch on the door frame that gets compressed when the door is closed and springs out when the door is opened, but I can't find anything like that on any of the door openings of my S8.

There's some sort of ultrasound security system on the newer cars that somehow reacts to the opening of a door by activating the interior lights relays. So you may have some corrosion on the relays.

I thought there was a switch in the lock mechanism. I suggest a search, the disco lighting is a common enough problem.

You need to take the door panel off and you can get to the lock. There is a double micro switch bolted to the lock. One is for the lights and the other is for the alarm.
