Re: How about me? I thought I got an awesome deal on a 97
Hey Paul,
I paid $11,500 for a '97 a month ago with 70K and I feel like I paid way too much given the market right now. Whew these cars are pricey to keep up. Schaumburg Audi quoted $600 for the trans service! I think I'll go buy that little marine pump, start grinding that torx fitting and getting the car up on stands! They wanted $1500 to replace the oil pan gasket and oil cooler seals which both are leaking. Is the oil cooler a tough job? If not, I am going to have a fun weekend in the Spring with music, beer and lots of grease and locals are welcome.

Re: Nice looking car Phil. I have an extra 55 gal. drum
Thanks, I like your car better though, maybe I'll get one in a few years. The silver and black leather is a nice looking combo on the A8, new or old. The headrest video screens are really cool, is that a factory option, or did you have it done.
Is the 55 gallon drum of paint green by any chance? I've always wanted to concrete the yard and paint it green, sending the Robomower out is just too much work...

I'm paying for the Timing Belt, even still it's a bargain.
I'm toying with the idea of driving it back to NC to get the Timing Belt done at the dealer here. I can't decide if it's better to leave it undisturbed and bring it back to a local dealer, or not take a chance, and have it done at the Audi dealer there, and then hope that they will pay the dealer here to fix any issues that may arise from the reaplacement.
I'd just feel really stupid if it broke on my way home.

This one is an exception, not all '01 '02 prices are this low
Like you said, I could have bought a Camry, and watched it depreciate faster than this car will. I've always been a fan of high mileage cars, as I put about 35k per year on them, so there is no point in buying a new car. It's really strange how the cars that have the lowest profit margins, usually depreciate incredibly, whereas the high margin cars like SUVs, and the S Class, hold their value. I still can't believe I bought a 3 year old A8 for $21k! This one is so much cheaper than the '00 & '01 models I was looking at. They had 55k miles, which means they would be needing a timing belt soon, so I figure I'm going to have to replace it anyway. I guess this car was cheaper for the reasons you mentioned, but I didn't want those options anyway. I got the Homelink transmitter, Heated steering wheel and the sunshades, new style cellphone provisions, and the 18" hollow sport wheels, and Xenon lights. I wouldn't have picked the Xenon's but I may like them at night, except when they break and I have to spend $300 on a headlight! I didn't want an 'L', as the A8 is big enough already, and I want it to be as inconspicuous as possible, so I'm glad it doesn't have the Navigation antenna on the trunk, and the Parktronic sensors in the bumpers. I know that sounds crazy, but it works for me. I may eventually get the navigation system, and install the antenna under the rear package shelf to conceal it. I think my favorite feature will be the heated steering wheel, I've wanted one of those since Volvo introduced them in the late 80's. Actually my favorite feature is the safety offered by the ASF and other safety features, as that's why I bought the car.

Thanks; you'll love the car.
Here are some other issues you mentioned:
Timing belt:
I'd recommend waiting until you find a good independent mechanic who works on German cars. The timing belt/water pump/thermostat will be around $2k at the dealer, just over half that at an independent.
Heated steering wheel:
Don't be surprised if yours doesn't work. Most people on this board either don't have it when they thought they did (like me), or the wire has broken and the entire wheel must be replaced. If you do have it, it only comes on when you turn on the heated seat AND it's below a certain temperature outside.
Xenons:
They're standard on post-facelift (2000) cars, and you'll love them. Unlike many other cars, the A8's xenon beams won't blind oncoming drivers, yet they provide excellent nighttime vision.
