just finished timing belt change: 5,6,7,8 misfire and MAF code, doh!

So MAF but still one complete bank of cylinders at misfire, so that camshaft is probably off.

I did STFA but found nothing on just doing the timing.

Would only loosening the camshaft sprockets and realigning the camshaft with the special tool do the trick?

Thank for any help.

/EDIT]

The idle is also rough.

Can I fix this without taking the whole thing apart again?! Assuming the belt is not off by one tooth, i guess i could simply try to realign the camshaft sprockets by loosing them up and put the special camshaft locking tool to align them? I guess crankshaft needs to be locked at TDC for that right?

Oh BTW, one of the 8 crankshaft vibration pulley's bolt broke when putting it back, so i didn't replace it, could it be related in anyway to the rough idle?

I'm on zero free time schedule, so I'm looking for an easy way out... :-/

Thanks,

Martin

See if you can lock the cams. If you can't lock them at the same time....

check how far off they are. If they are just a bit off, I would lock the passenger's side cam first, then loosen the sprocket a bit. Lock the driver's side, loosen that sprocket too and finally lock the crank. Now you can double check everything (remember you could be 180 degrees off with the cam, it wouldn't hit but won't run either)

If your car has trouble it is nice to see when people jump in with helpful comments.

Re: Yes it is. I'll testify to that.

Not suprising...I don't think I've ever seen anything helpful from Sir CaptainMurphy Bt...

virtually everything he posts is a smartass comment with no value. Apparently he is just a post whore with nothing better to do.

With that said, the latest comments are fairly unbelievable.

i'm not offended at all, i wish i could have as much free time as him to make condescending

off-topic posts. Anyway, he just turned the technical info into something that appears as catastrophic, which it is not.

Thank you Tozo for the info, I will open the thing up again today to fix this.

driver side camshaft and crankshaft were aligned, passenger side was off

so i loosened the passenger side camshaft sprocket and aligned the camshaft with the driver side camshaft, so that the special tool locks both camshafts. The crankshaft is now just slightly off (perhaps 2mm off the TDC mark).

First time I start the engine, everything runs smooth and I get no codes, 2nd time i start the engine, i get the check engine light and the codes are cyl. 1 and 3 misfire and *intermittent* (no mention of intermittent before) G40 implausible position code.

After starting the engine twice, I can now lock both camshafts together with the special tool, and the crankshaft is at TDC. I don't feel I can adjust to be significantly more precise. Would that imply that perhaps the timing belt is off by one tooth?

Thanks for any help!

If the crank locks and both cam is locked the timing belt position is irrelevant.

That's why the sprockets are tapered. I would clear the codes and drive it for a bit to see if they come back.

I agree, but if, for example, there is significant slack between one of the camshaft and the

crankshaft and less slack (more tension) between the two camshafts (thus the crankshaft may become de-synchronized, if even possible), would that lead to a slight camshaft de-timing and thus having 2 cylinders desynchronized? (again i'm not sure this is even possible, but i wonder)

BTW, after turning the crankshaft manually to check the alignment, i recleared the codes and restarted the engine. Again the 1st start was ideal but 2nd start gave me back a rough idle and the codes came back. Both times i did not wait for the engine to become hot though.

Thank you very much for your comments TozoM8!

If the cams and the crank is locked you can loosen the two cam sprockets to even the tension.
