Default I swapped an auto quattro tranny in a 1999 A4 in my garage last summer...

it wasn't too bad of a job. 4 jackstands and a floor jack with a $50 Harbor Freight transmission adapter made it go fairly smoothly.

Default be EXTREMELY careful if you're considering purchasing from the big trans "rebuilder" in Phoenix

spend a little time on Google if you're seriously considering this option...<ul><li><a href="http://www.ripoffreport.com/searchresults.asp?q1=ALL&amp;q5=&amp;q4=Phoenix+Ha rd+Parts&amp;q6=&amp;q3=&amp;q2=&amp;q7=&amp;searc htype=0&amp;submit2=Search%21">Watch OUT!</a></li></ul>

Ok so I recently picked up an 97 A8 with with a transmission doing the same thing, no forward gears.

Did you ever find out exactly what the issue is? I plan on doing the re-build myself and am wondering what kind of cost I'm looking at for parts. If the OP doesn't read this, anyone else know what this particular transmission issue is caused by? I've searched the forums like crazy for as much info as I can. TIA!

I recently lost all forward gears. Not only that, the car rolled away. Then my mechanic friend in Union City, California took a look and said all I needed was two axels. $500 and it's now back on the road.

put the car up on the lift last night actually, and the axles are fine. looks like i'll be pulling the trans soon, opening it up and seeing what the deal is.
