Default Loud knocking from right rear, any theories.

My 98 D2Q, after a long layoff, is back on the road and passed inspection just fine. But it has developed a loud knock/thump coming from the right rear Not a rattle or a squeak, definitely a knocking or thumping.. Going over the slightest bump triggers it, bumps too small to make the suspension a likely culprit. It’s like there’s something loose in the trunk or the fender well, but the battery seems to be well-secured, and taking everything out of the trunk hasn’t helped either. The wheel well lining isn’t loose. The trunk lid is solid. Where should I look next? Is there some part back there that is notorious for coming loose?

Try gently setting parking brake to see if noise is brake pads, i've had anti-rattle clips break and cause the same noise over small bumps.
You can also try applying the brakes to see if that eliminates the noise.

Any recent work done to it, loan it out? Tire swaps?

I replaced the rear subframe, so that was the first thing I suspected and examined. I never did one before and am perfectly willing to consider the possibility that I made a mistake, but I cannot find anything wrong there and it just passed inspection. No tire swaps, no other drivers. The parking brake suggestion intrigues me, since I never use the parking brake (it’s flat as a pancake around here). I’ll try looking at that, and if that’s not it I will start removing parts one by one to see if anything stops the knocking.

Most likely the subframe or a loose cv. I managed to pop a nut welded on the inside of my jetta a arm by not using enough straight line hand tight finesse. That would be the first place I'd look, long bolts have a mind of their own, cv first time seems to come loose until you get em nice and snug. Looks like there are six welded nuts inside on this subframe. Get an alignment after you figure all that out.
