Default My experience w/ 00011 vs 00001 (long)

00011 - Car always seemed to be in a gear too high. Constantly lugging and reluctant to shift (required a lot of throttle movement). Produced a lot of TC shutter and vibration. I would experience what felt like a shift in tip mode, especially in 3rd, which I assume is the TC locking and unlocking? Almost unbearable to drive, used tip mode most of the time.

00001 - Transmission seems more responsive. TC shutter hardly noticable. Does clunk every once in a while. More pronounced downshifting when stopping or slowing. I think this is the better setting.

The shutter and clunks are beginning to get worse. It doesn't really hunt, but it isn't operating like I think it should, either.

I had the TC replaced by the dealer around 92,000 and the fluid changed before that about 60,000. Currently, my 98 A8 has about 107,000 on the clock.

Eventually I will fix the trans, so I am in the research phase so I won't be rushing about for info when the event does happen.

Interesting to note - Herbert at eurotrans told me it was NOT the VB causing my problems. Wouldn't elaborate on what he thought it might be, however.

It's normally the VB. This wears out the TQ, so people have to replace both.

Default Will tell you more in a week

I'm getting a rebuilt valve body. We'll see if it cures the woes my tranny has been experiencing for a long time.

Considering I have a fresh rebuild including torque converter, I will be interested to see what it does.

Default Has anybody tried a rebuilt valve body with an old converter? Is converter wear-out proven?

It may be, and I just missed that posting. Or I could be missing the more obvious thing for which TQ is an abbreviation. Otherwise I'd be hesitant to recommend what could be unnecessary work.

Tozo showed that an old valve body can make a newly rebuilt transmission hunt. Paul's about to try a rebuilt valve body in a rebuilt transmission. But do we know that a rebuilt valve body in an old transmission won't fix it?

Given how much time the converter clutch spends in a controlled slip situation (interesting to record in VAG-COM then look at), I'm not convinced that hunting amounts to much more wear.

Default We will see. If it stops the hunting (it should) then we will try it on another A8

without rebuilding the tranny or the TC. the TC rebuilt is so cheap, no one would risk to pull the tranny twice. I don't think that hunting wears out the TC much (it is full with fluid). I think hunting wears out the driver more.

Default I agree with what you are saying. In addition, I'll bet there is a sensor/ECM I/O component, too.

On a side note, my A8 idles rough in D but not in N. What would that mean relative to the TC/

Also, I am not showing any codes - yet. I don't really know how to properly interpret the measuring block data - something I need to do with my Vag-Com. I'm sure there is something there in the numbers.
