Okay so I ended up taking the car back apart and doing the timing properly this time. It is now spot on.
Noticed that the air pump hose was leaking massively so put a bandaid on it (not literally)
Took it for a drive and once again got the flashing CEL
Scanned it and got P0308 (cylinder 8 misfire) and P0012 (intake cam over-retarded)
Looks like the cam chain adjuster is probably failing on the drivers side. I'm not going to worry about it right now. I have the normal cam chain rattle on cold startup but both shoes looked like they are in good condition.
