I removed my front left axle on my 2003 S8 tonight to replace the outer boot. While I had it out and I decided to do the inner as well and and now I'm regretting it as I need to finish up tomorrow for a trip to Seattle.
see photos but the issue is I cannot get the metal end cap for the inner CV joint to seat. I do not have the Bentley butt this tripod housing does not appear to be designed to tap off the end, and instead it looks like you have to remove the metal plate which I did. The new CV joint kit came with a new metal plate, but it seems too small.
am I missing something? The lip on the old plate is clearly turned up more the diameters are almost identical allthough mine pops in and seems to have a small amount of play. The seating area of the outer housing appears to be flared in such a way that the harder you press and the more it would forced the metal out. But how the hell would you press that in while you have an axle inst

alled? Anyone know any tricks?

I ran the parts by two Audi techs at different independent shops and I think we've determined it might be an error on Audis parts production side. We tried pressing the cap to see if it would expand in diameter to no avail. I think I'll order a couple different aftermarket kits and hope one of them fits.

I reused my one of my old ones, and had a similar situation it took me quite some time with a drift and a hammer to get them reinstalled.
