Need Brakes and Rotors front and Rear 2001 S8
 

Can you please recommend what parts and where to get Brakes front and rear for 2001 S8........car has original calipers .

Front Rotors: Brembo from TireRack
Front Pads: Pigid from RockAuto
Rear Rotors: Haven't replaced yet.
Rear Pads: Textar provided by installing shop.

In about 18 months I'll need to replace all rotors and pads. I'm considering going with StopTech Sport Slotted Rotors front and rear. Pads I'm uncertain.

You want to buy from a recycler, because they will have the little bracket and hard pipe on the backside that are not included with rebuilt calipers. I had to make those using pictures. Annoying. It's also a good time to replace the hoses, when the originals are nearly old enough to drive.

I do not see the point of larger brakes on a street car, you are not going to run gumballs and the stock brakes are more than adequate if you don't ride them. No brake system is adequate if you have poor technique.
I would also recommend not downgrading from a opposed-piston setup to a sliding caliper setup.

For a stock setup, if you are not concerned about dust I'd be curious about the "CENTRIC 10205941 C-TEK Metallic" front pads for $15 from Rockauto. Probably dusty but so are most S8 front pads.
Rear pads, there are a million choices as they are a very common pad. The Bosch Quietcast Ceramics have been OK for me. The rears wear unevenly due to the caliper design and the action of the ESP (at least on my cars where I get snow and like to play around with the ESP). This is not a big deal if you swap the pads around partway through their life, or pick an inexpensive pad that is rotor-friendly and replace them before they get too thin.

Re: rotors if you can afford it, a coated rotor. Make sure your supplier does not send the smaller A8 size rotors, this is a common mistake. (345mm front, 280mm rear)
I am not a fan of drilled or slotted rotors on the street, I have gotten a lot of noise form some slotted rotors although whatever's on my S8 is quiet.
My goals for the street are: Good stopping (though this seems to be a given), Relatively quiet, rotor friendly, and good value. Relatively quiet, dusty pads are usually OK on rotors in my experience. I like to do a couple sets of pads before having to replace rotors, ideally. Particularly on cars where brake pad changes are easy. I'm in there a lot anyway doing brake fluid changes and snow tire changeovers, etc.

The brakes will need to be bedded in aggressively IMO to work properly. That means getting damn hot, making popping noises and having to drive around to cool them off. If you have to stop, stop well back and creep forward so your brakes are not cooling with the brake clamped in one spot for very long. The D2 gets irritated and pulls out power if you ride the brakes a lot but you can ride the brakes some while bedding, IMO that is safer than trying to adequately heat the brakes doing panic stops from higher speeds, also less likely to get the cops called on you. Some people complain about braking performance on a new setup but never bedded the brakes in properly.

Make a brake block if you haven't already, huge improvement in pedal feel.

An S8 would have to swap uprights, not worth it as they are a good setup to begin with. I had an early FL with PFL fronts. Tiny and pretty weak. Bled them six ways to Sunday, tried a bunch of different pads, and when it was ready for pads and rotors, swapped to 360mm rotors and D3 calipers. It was a dramatic improvement.

I'm just reading this thread, hope I'm not too late. You're Stoptech choice is great, but go with the cryogenic treated versions due to the cars weight. Much better stopping and less fade. Also Akebono pads are amazing Akebono Online Parts Catalog great stopping power, low dust, no noise, last forever. I really don't know how they do that.
