New to List (and car); my compliments!
Hello. I'm fairly new to this list, but I've read quite a few of the threads and lurked for a while and I must say: what an awesome resource, especially for someone like me who does EVERYTHING to my cars myself! Bravo! I just bought a cherry 99 A8 4.2 with 39K miles on it and drove it home (St.Charles, IL) from Houston in about 12.5 Hours. What an incredible road car. I've been fortunate to have had many cool cars, but I believe this just might be the coolest. I'm looking forward to a long and fanatic relationship with her. Thanks for all the great info. 12.5 hours from Houston is really hauling. I made that trip myself last summer to do the exact same thing. It took about 20 hours with stopping and getting gas and food and taking pictures. I think it was about 1200 miles. Congrats on the new buy.

Welcome
Love the drive from Houston to this part of the country. Will probably be making that trip in a few months recruiting new Docs to my company and am very much looking forward to doing it in my A8. 12 hours is really moving thats like 90- 100 constant right?

WELCOME! The more of us that tear these things apart, the better the databse is going to be!!!
If you ever undertake an "operation" on your A8, please document what you do, how you do it, and what the results were using a digital camera and a few words. If it is a common problem or of interest to the community, the procedure can be posted by PaulW on his AudiPages.com website. If you haven't been there yet, you should check it out!

Thanks. I have been to the pages (most useful) and if I can contribute, I will. My digital camera is at the ready. The only issues my car has (knock wood) are headrests and an apparent inop heated wheel. I do have the vag-com: I bought the obd-tool on ebay for the pre-buy and currently have only the shareware. I wish I would have done a little more research and just gone with vag-com complete (live and learn, right?). Looks like I'll activate and become an "11" tip map...I think this is gonna be fun....

Re: Time from Houston
Thanks for the welcome. I've been reprimanded by my co-driver and reminded that our actual road time was more like 14.5 hours for the 1100+ miles for an average of somewhere around 80 mph. I guess I tend to exaggerate a bit- sorry. It just SEEMED like 12 hours, really. The car is an awesome bahn-burner, very poised at hyper-legal speeds, and most of MO was pretty high speed. No tickets (thank you Dr. Valentine). :-)

Thanks very much for the offer, Herr Guru! I'm fairly (ahem) well-practiced at both of those endeavors, but both are more fun as social activities than solo...
