A compression test would work but a borescoope is a handy thing to have around. I have an older one that pugs into my phone or pc. The link below is for a newer one that is wireless. I plan on picking up the wireless one soon as it will be much easier to manuver without it having to be plugged into something.

GAME OVER- I took out the spark plugs today and this is what I found. Six of the plugs looked good but two were smashed. I also did a compression test and all cylinders were low. I also looked in the cylinders and it looks like two pistons have holes in them. If anyone's interested, I'll sell it as a parts car for $500. If not, I'll have no choice but to junk it for the same price. I'm already into it for a few thousand, including new parts I've never put onto it. I'll even help to load it up onto your shippers' trailer and will also give access to the two A8's I was using for piles of parts. I hate to see it go, but replacing pistons is beyond the work I wanted to put into it
Now that I look back on it, I should have taken a compression test first before I bought it, but the guy I bought it from was adamant about the fact that it only needed a cam position sensor to run. So that's why I started the project by replacing sensors. I've owned 200+ cars over the years and have never done a compression test on any of them before or after buying; this was just not good luck
I'm not so much worried about the $$ and time I lost on this project, but still hate to see a rare supercar go to the junkyard. If I find another D2 S8 that needs not as much engine work, I'll buy it and help to keep another rare Audi on the road.

Ya, very sad. If I could get a cheap used engine to put in I'd do that. Here's what I think the source of the skipped time is from. The tensioner is so far out that the plastic pad is gone and the chain cut halfway through the metal base. I also looked at the timing belt and pulleys and they look newer.

Ya, if I could find a good used engine cheaply locally, that would be a good idea. The ones in the junkyard are of unknown condition. They're in the junkyard for a reason, who knows what could be wrong with those..

Maybe I'll buy this S8 in Virginia, only 13,332 original miles. The price is only $23k... Actually, I've never seen a D2 S8 this expensive...
