A compression test would work but a borescoope is a handy thing to have around. I have an older one that pugs into my phone or pc. The link below is for a newer one that is wireless. I plan on picking up the wireless one soon as it will be much easier to manuver without it having to be plugged into something.

GAME OVER- I took out the spark plugs today and this is what I found. Six of the plugs looked good but two were smashed. I also did a compression test and all cylinders were low. I also looked in the cylinders and it looks like two pistons have holes in them. If anyone's interested, I'll sell it as a parts car for $500. If not, I'll have no choice but to junk it for the same price. I'm already into it for a few thousand, including new parts I've never put onto it. I'll even help to load it up onto your shippers' trailer and will also give access to the two A8's I was using for piles of parts. I hate to see it go, but replacing pistons is beyond the work I wanted to put into it

Now that I look back on it, I should have taken a compression test first before I bought it, but the guy I bought it from was adamant about the fact that it only needed a cam position sensor to run. So that's why I started the project by replacing sensors. I've owned 200+ cars over the years and have never done a compression test on any of them before or after buying; this was just not good luck

I'm not so much worried about the $$ and time I lost on this project, but still hate to see a rare supercar go to the junkyard. If I find another D2 S8 that needs not as much engine work, I'll buy it and help to keep another rare Audi on the road.

Where is the car located? Do you also have the parts cars or are they still at the pick-n-pull?

The car is in Golden Colorado. The parts cars are in the junkyard.

Should have saved the parts cars and pulled a short block from one of them. You could always grab an A8 block and put the intake and cams off your S into in...just a thought. Everything is fixable.

Ya, very sad. If I could get a cheap used engine to put in I'd do that. Here's what I think the source of the skipped time is from. The tensioner is so far out that the plastic pad is gone and the chain cut halfway through the metal base. I also looked at the timing belt and pulleys and they look newer.

Don't junk it that's your $$ going down the drain WITH a rare car. Just start pulling the block apart and see if you can source a cheap A8 engine. And in the meantime you could always clean up the engine bay, and make it look good while you're in there. That's what I would do.

Ya, if I could find a good used engine cheaply locally, that would be a good idea. The ones in the junkyard are of unknown condition. They're in the junkyard for a reason, who knows what could be wrong with those..

Maybe I'll buy this S8 in Virginia, only 13,332 original miles. The price is only $23k... Actually, I've never seen a D2 S8 this expensive...
