Better yet, find any dealer or supplier on the planet that has or can get a new engine for a 2001 - 2003 S8 ... or even a new block ...

...we won't be holding our breath while you look.
No need to be rude here is a link

I would imagine the block is the same. Just different components if anything. Call Audi to verify. Speak to someone in service. Just ask them if an A8 block and S8 block are interchangeable. Or most junk yards have interchange charts as well. I know of one for sure in Cleveland Ohio that has an interchange chart. It's called Mcmahons Auto Wrecking.

If you keep the S8 MAF, throttle and intake manifold with the car I think everything else is compatible. Coils, sensors, etc. are the same AFAIK. If you need a car to drive and can afford the time and the pick-n-pull A8 engine it'd be one way to get on the road.
Otherwise in this case I do not think it'd be worth the labor to end up with this chassis running an A8 engine. There is a good chance this car has not shown us the last of it's problems yet. Also there was some talk of cluster swapping which means sorting out the immobilizer.
If you knew the trans was good it'd be worth buying as a parts car.

Used transmissions are not as easy to sell as one might think. People that need them aren't generally buying from forum members. They getting one rebuilt at a shop, or paying the dealer to do it.

Regarding the condition of it. The carfax says that it was well maintained until 2011 when a 19 year old kid bought it at 133k miles. Then from there on in it was downhill. Then it sat unused outside from 2015-2017. 2015 may have been when the engine disintegrated.

Well still looking into options...
I'm sorry to hear about your car. if you decide to not restore it and or part it. Please let me know. I'm in Northern Colorado.

I've seen it on CL. No affiliation:

https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/...398847317.html

2001 Audi S8 project, very rare, only 419 imported in 2001 - $1000 (Golden)
condition: fair
cylinders: 8 cylinders
drive: 4wd
fuel: gas
odometer: 213000
paint color: black
size: full-size
title status: clean
transmission: automatic
type: sedan

Very rare, one of 418 imported into the U.S. that year. Tiptronic, all wheel drive Quattro, 4.2 liter 90 degree V8 engine with quad overheard cams, five valves per cylinder, 360hp (this is not a wimpy A8 which had 310 horsepower). Located in Golden Colorado. I can help your shipper load. Needs engine (This engine is an interference engine, the cam chain tensioners deteriorated and caused the engine to skip time which damaged the valves and pistons). This car is being sold with about $1000 in extra parts for free, some still brand new in boxes (2 extra cam position sensors, 1 extra crank position sensor, 1 extra complete fuel pump assembly, four extra alcantera door panels, two side window assemblies, new middle armrests, three sets of carpet and rubber Audi floormats, taillight, one extra S8 gauge cluster, new starter, new air filter, new pvc valve, new battery, 2 extra hood struts, 1 extra window motor, 1 extra fuel pump sending unit, 1 extra fuel pump relay, and more). Clean Colorado title, comes with manual, clean carfax (this car was never in an accident), and years of maintenance bills including $7000 for a re-manufactured transmission 60k miles ago. The body has no dents. I was going to fix this super rare flagship supercar, but rebuilding or replacing the engine is more than I can tackle since I rent an apartment and my landlord would kick me out if he saw car parts all over the house.

Ya, I hate to say, but I gave up on it.If I had a garage and lift I'd pursue it, but I rent a place and have a hilly dirt driveway with no garage. I'm selling it with the info for the running S8 engine hoping that someone will either rebuild the broken S8 engine or put in the running S8 engine. I'm not selling as a parts car or selling any parts off of it. I've gotten lots of responses to the ad from all over the country, so I know someone will eventually buy it and save it. It would be awesome to see it on the road again.

Pushbutton Auto was right, I can't even give this car away. It seems that Audi people would just assume buy a new Audi than to buy a project Audi. It goes to the crusher this week
