Okay, thinking of replacing my car within the next 6-8 months

Tell me if I am wrong, but....
you can't keep an A8 as a beater. You need extra garage space, you have to pay insurance, if the tranny goes it will be expensive for a beater. He will keep the S8 for years, so it will depreciate anyway, doesn't matter how many miles he will put in it.

You deserve an S8.
You babied your car so much. After all that work it would hurt to see when the tranny dies and you have to pay $3000. It would not affect the resale value much anyway.

maybe it has to do with location, but in NC, no garage, and insurance is less than 1000 a year on a
97. My partner bought the last 03 S8 from a VP at AoA. It had 17k and cost over $53k with a fresh 100k warranty (warantied to 117k). Expensive, yes. Perfect car, yes. It would be worth it to me to keep Pauls car for the $8k or so it would sell for here, but I understand the numbers in Chicago would differ and warrant different decisions...
Speaking from experience I do know this- If he lays out the cash for the car he wants he will never look back!

Re: Get an 02 S8 - Best Price Point
Paul,
I agree on not replacing the transmission. I just took $2500 off my 97 when I let it go as I just told him the transmission had ADD sometimes. It works but it just required re starting in cold weather. You will not get your money back so just discount the car.
As for the S8, this color package you picked is my favorite for this year. These 03s are averaging 35k you know where so it will cost you about $38k plus tax. An 02 S8 with 50 is about 27k. And, 01 average about 23.5 but mileage is up near 65. I think the 02 represents the best price point on this car at this time.
If I were you, I would wait til October and you will be able to get an 04 for the same price as the 03 S8. I'd like to see you move to the D3 forum and trick out the new bodystyle cars. If you go S8, get the 02 and you're "under 30" versus the "under 40" for the 03. By the time you sell it, it's going to be a 7k car anyway, if you drive it up to 150k+.

S8 is the only way up from an A8. I also looked at them last month, but they are just too over...
... priced for the extras you get over the A8. Plus I really do not like the taller flatter front end compared to the pre-face lift. Seeing a pre & post side by side really makes the pre look sportier.
