OMG - I'm in shock.... my car just caught on fire and is totaled....

I was driving about 5 mins from my house and saw smoke from under the hood.

I didn't panic, ran to the trunk to grab my fire extinguisher. Opened the hood, smoke and flames everywhere, pull the pin - nothing. Not a drop of anything!!!!

If this doesn't get the bad luck award, I don't know what will.

I run back to the car, grab my ipod and the binder from the glovebox. Nothing I could so but watch the flames get bigger.

At this point, it's really burning and another guy comes buy with an extinguisher (that works) and knocks down the flames a little bit.

Another 5 mins, the truck shows up and they put it out. Squirrels made a nest under the hood (we could see and hear them). When I saw the smoke it was probably just the nest and maybe a little plastic burning. I'm sure I could have saved it.

The whole hood melted, the fenders are cooked, the firewall and the whole engine is burned. There's about 3 inches of water in the car.

My car was mechanically and cosmetically close to perfect and didn't need a thing for a long time. I've been sort thinking about a D3 but had no intentions of getting rid of my car and would swap it with my wife's.

I know some of you have experience so please advise as to best handle the insurance company. I have to get the car back for parts...

thanks, at this point I wish I was to distract me from the frustration :)

Hmmm, i'm thinking I should get myself an extinguisher

Good thing you made it out ok. Oh, well find a s8 and feel better. most people get to do that.

Terribly sorry for you. But you are OK, the main thing...

go buy one today. Happened to me about 20+ years ago and I saved the car. Would have this time too..

That is crazy! Sorry to see that. Hope the insurance company understands.

Unfortunately I think you did indeed win the bad luck award.

Crap! I'm glad you are OK and no one was hurt, but it really sucks that.....

you had the foresight to have an extinguisher with you but it had failed/leaked over the years. I always carry an extinguisher with me, but this is a big reminder to check it once in a while. I agree with the others, go get a D2 S8 with the insurance money (plus some) and enjoy the new car. As far as getting the old car for parts, once the insurance company has totaled it, ask how much they want for the carcass.

Sorry to hear :(

Glad you are OK. It is just an Audi. You can get another one today :)

Re: go buy one today.

Sure will, but glad to hear you're OK. I've heard that aluminum cars tend to go up pretty quickly; specifically, they melt faster than steel, so I'm really glad you got out. Picts I've seen of late-model Ferraris and Lamborghinis -- even the occasional Audi R8 -- that had engine fires were disconcerting, to say the least.
