Second gen Acura TLs had bad trannies--customers got new ones...
Around 1999-2001, hardparts shredding, losing function, blocking screens. If you look at Consumer Reports there was a black dot for those years for trannies, everything else was excellent. The Honda response was to give everybody new transmissions,(with some encouragement from a suit, to be sure.) Lots of infor on the web about it, still.
A customer-friendly response and one related to Acura's holding their value pretty well, in my opinion.

It the same for others
The GM 4L30e transmission found in some Isuzu and BMW vehicles (as well as GM ;-) has the same fluid service requirements. That is, fill till overflow with engine running.
I really don't feel it's that bad.
