Overheat fan does not seem to be working at higher temps
Hi All,
1997 Audi A8 D2 4.2. Timing Belt done with water pump 30K ago and drove fine for a long time. Heater cores replaced due to stuck thermostat so replaced those and thermostat, flushed and bled system. AC works fine and electric fan comes on when you turn the AC on. Viscous fan was replaced over 30K miles ago and spins up well. Temp sensor changed at the back of the passenger head along with trinary switch in the rad.
Problem I am having is that I haven't heard the overheat fan come on with the AC off, for a while. Gauge used to stay solid at 1/3 and now it sometimes goes up one notch. Also when I park it to fill it up with gas, when I go to start it again, the needle can go up about a notch and a half. Is there a fan output test I can do in VCDS? Looking for diagnostics path to test all equipment etc. I've got a feeling the rad is blocked and hence not activating the trinary switch to start the fan up.
Any help much appreciated.

I remember when i first got the car,i was at a mechanic and it was very hot 95 degrees.
I started the car and temp needle went all the way over the half.I thought its gonna overheat but as soon as i started driving it came back to normal.

Figured it out - Thermostat I put in was crappy brand. Purchased a Mahle t-stat that opens at 82c and car runs great. Temp gauge never goes over a third, lifter noise is less and trans shifts better. Back to pimpin' in my A8.
