just attach the brackets and mount it vertically
i bought my phatbox at a local VW place for $160 and they gave me the brackets for FREE!!!
remove the cd changer... mount the brackets to the phatbox and then place the unit in VERICALLY. i had to use different nuts/bolts then the supplied hardware and the unit mounted perfectly, thought slightly off center because of the holes in the audi's support stand, but most importantly there was enough clearance at the bottom of the unit to allow the plug to fit and lay and also easy access to the top of the unit to insert the cartridge... BEST OF ALL the trunk cover fits over the PB without any problems...
