Default Maybe - I have a few ideas..... Please read fellow A8ers

Now, first there is a product that does steering wheel controls, but in most other cars, and ours is excluded.

... BUT, in doing the research I had a few thoughts. Before I move on to the design, I have a few questions for you...

From what I have read on here, I gather the controls are data on a single wire, am I correct?

How much voltage is found inside the steering wheel currently?

I might be able to use a few technologies from the custom home audio market, and a few from the car audio market to make this work.

If anyone can send me the PDF of any info on the steering wheel from the bentley CD, I will move in deeper.

Thanks in advance,

Default Also....

... It no data on a single wire, many car companies have used different resistances on a single wire for controls ( for door, lock and unlock wire in a door for example ).

If this is teh case, this would be easier If not, it still may be possible. It is all about the voltage available in the wheel.

Default PaulW? Anyone else with the bentley CD?

I have not taken my radio out in a while, and would rather not unless you guys can not help.

Does our plug look like this ( the shape )?

Does our plug have a White/Yellow wire?

If it does, is it in the position marked below?

Thanks, I feel like I am getting warmer...

Default What year and radio are you referring too? All have a 20 pin connector

Delta and Concert 20 pin connector (which is similar, but does not look the same as your picture unless you are showing the back of it)

Symphony connector:

And here's yours:

Default 12 VDC is available at the wheel, plus a data wire

But I'm not sure about 98 and 99's which have no controls. You'd have to look at how the horn works.....maybe with a PC board, or maybe just a 12 VDC signal.

Default So there are no controls for the radio at the wheel for 98s and 99s???

Wow that sucks, glad I have a 97!

If that is the case, then I guess the mod I am designing will only work with 97s.

Steering wheel controls exactly like factory on most any aftermarket radio. Mine will be the Alpine 7998

Default So where do you get that info on the standard protocol?

I really don't have anything to control except my iPod and XM radio....but they don't have any inputs to do it......so it really doesn't matter.
