Is it possible to own an A8 and live in peace?

My personal experience is yes, you can, but......
you must be vigilant with maintenance. I've had my 1997 A8 since 2001, and I've never had the car fail to get me where I needed to go. I've done all of the maintenance, and replaced most of the wear items on the car before they failed. My tranny thumps and hunts, but not badly. I'm in for a tranny service sometime in the future, but who knows how long it will last? That is my ONLY concern with this car- tranny longevity.

Re: Well said!
Buy VAG com. It is an essential diagnostic tool for this and any other Volkswagen/Audi vehicle. Plan for the required maintenance and do it on your terms before it bites you on the ***. Required maintenance should include the tranny fluid and filter every 30k miles or so. Pri ce out your timing belt service from an independent and the dealer before your need is urgent and then plan for it (or do it yourself).
I felt so much better having turned the wrenches on the car. From a mechanical perspective, it is just a car like any other. My advice is don't stick your head in the sand and worry. Read up on it, watch out for the known issues and stay ahead of it. It is an awesonme car, it just requires a little looking after.
