Default Possible S8.

Hello there, new to the forum. In the market for a D2 S8. I've found one, it's got high mileage, but the owner says lots of maintenance has been done, with records.

https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/6120627118.html

Transmission has been done, with most of the front end suspension. What do you think i should look for?

Thanks

Transmission "done" ... you need to know exactly what this means. If rebuilt, you need paper work meaning actually removed and rebuilt ... not just a service, like atf & filter change, which means absolutely nothing.

If the trans was really rebuilt recently (not 80-100K miles ago), it may merit that price (maybe a bit less), but this is NOT a model that most S8 buyers are looking for ... 2001 so no trans sport mode and this one is conspicuously missing the enthusiast preferred (and standard) sport seats, rather it is equipped with the no-cost "option" of old design PFL (97-99) A8 comfort seats, maybe better for long trips(?), but not even as nice as 2000-2003 A8 comfort seats.

Cheers

Default Thanks

Yeah, I didn't notice that until you said something. I also noticed that it didn't have the S badges either....

Almost made me think it was an A8 trying to be an S8. Any other way to tell?

It's got the S gauges, 5V 4.2, but later generation A8 wheels...

The VIN is the best way ... but it has the standard S8 interior wood and other trim ... and the engine cover is correct.

Default check the door sills

My 2002 S8 has the S8 badge in the aluminum door sills. Check there. Also you have the S8 steering wheel.

As silverd2 stated, you'll need the VIN to confirm whether it is or isn't a S8. But all the items identified in the previous posts pretty much guarantee it's a real S8. At this point in the D2 lifespan, it wouldn't be worth getting all the parts to "fake" a S8 for a sale.

Good luck.

The Cincinnati one looks like a bargain compared to this D2 S8 on eBay. The asking price is hilarious, that's what I paid over 4 years ago for mine with 89,XXX miles.

eBay D2 S8

Good luck on your hunt for a S8.

If it does not have a transferrable transmission warranty it's just a car with a working transmission, maybe $4K. Even if the trans has been fixed they may not have fixed the underlying problem that causes damage and it might break again shortly, it all depends on the quality of the work.
