Problem. Thief has key to my Audi

Hi guys, I've been lurking a while, posted a couple of times, so let me introduce myself. Hi, I'm Dave.
And I have an issue I want your input on. My house was broken into, and among the things taken were all the spare keys, including the keys to my A8. I have one switchblade key- the theives have the other switchblade, the mechanics key, and the plastic key.
The dealer wants $1200 to replace all the locks. My auto insurance will cover it, but with a $1000 deductible.
What would you guys do??

A less expensive partial solution ...

After you get any replacement keys and they're programmed, the old keys will at least no longer be able to start the car. Unfortunately, the old keys will still be able to unlock the car.

If it was me, I'd replace all the locks.

Your car is the ultimate bait (unfortunately). Any chance of using it to catch these criminals...

...with a camera or tracking device?

Sorry to hear about this. You probably want to forget about this incident ASAP: in that case I would just get the locks changed.

Park it where the camera can see it, and wait!

If he can un lock it, sit in the seat and try to start the car, you should be able to get a photo, call the police, maybe shoot him... :-)

get a seperate immobilizer? lojack? maybe sell the car?

Angus Beef 09-14-2005 08:55 AM

I like the car, hate to sell it.

with 149,000 miles on it, its worth more to me than I can sell it for. I'll probably just bite the bullet and change the locks.

Doesn't seem like a very value oriented thing to do

Not knowing what year and condition, $1400 to change the locks seems quite crazy. That's a huge percentage of the value of the car that will never be recouped.

What's your insurance policy cover for a stolen car? Why not spend half that money on lo-jack or a tenth on an immobilizer?

If the old key fob wont work after recoding.... shave the door handles

Egads, man! That's it! I'm going West Coast style! The wife will love it.

That actually might look really cool to have a clean look like that.
