rear cam seal leak - 40v
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/55607/015.1.jpg"></center><p>
in the valve cover kits for the 40v engine, they usually include a half circle plug which I assumed was maybe for the 32v engine. I never saw where it would be used.
I have the transmission removed and you can see that the rear cam seal is leaking so I should probably take care of it now.
How is this one replaced?
Of course this project is snowballing, I'm going to change the rear main seal while I have the tranny out. Real easy once you get to this stage, probably an add'l 30 mins.
Also, the 40v engine does not appear to have any breather hoses at the back of the engine. A couple of people suggested changing those while the trans was out.
If I should do anything else, let me know!

Bob, to change the cam plug,
Pierce it with a screwdriver (shallow, don't hit the cam) and pry it out without touching/damaging the head. Drive a new plug in. My A6 has the exact same type. As for the breather hoses, you most certainly do have them. The passenger side hose is connected to the PCV "horn" that sits on top of the intake towards the rear. The driver's side looks to be quite accessible and is connected to a steel tube and goes to the left cylinder head. Both hoses connect under the intake. Look at the 40V intake pictures posted recently and you'll see them.

ok, thanks... that seems easy enough. I'll look a little closer at the breather hoses.
seems to be more metal tubing than rubber but I'll look again. Don't want to miss anything at this stage!

Here's a pic from vwgti16vt's
IM removal:

I see that most of the driver's side is indeed a metal pipe and could be replaced from under the hood. Looks much better than the 32V. Good luck!!

I just did mine today.......
....on my 2.8 30V.

On the 30V V6, the entire inside of the plug is hollow, so nothing to hit. Not sure about the 40V V8.

so I removed the old ones last night and did it pretty much the same way. It's rubber coated metal..
so you can't poke a hole through it. What probably would work well is a dent puller where you thread into the middle and pull.
I have the transmission removed and the pass side was a little tight. I'm not sure how easily you could so this from up top but I haven't seen the top of the engine in about 10 days
