Rear coil springs
 

A few months back I opened the driver's door and sat in my car and heard a very long *BOING!* come from the back end of the car. Later I noticed that the ride was much bouncier, and it turned out that both my rear coil springs were broken. (I'm guessing that one was already broken, and the other was on the way out right before it broke from me sitting down.)

Anyhow, when I took it in (don't trust myself with these sorts of high-tension repairs), the mechanic said there wasn't any aftermarket coil springs available, so he'd have to get it direct from Audi -- at about $300 a piece.

Not looking for any kind of amazing or sporty suspension, just the regular old springs will do. The only thing is, that part on Rock Auto doesn't have the certification in the US, only for European cars. (If you're familiar with their site, they use little flags to show what market the parts are made for.) I'm wondering if there were different suspension parts used in the rear end for cars with the smaller engines that were more commonly sold over there. (Got a 4.2l in my 2002 A8L.)

There are aftermarket springs available. Or if I were you I would go with full coil over kit. They are less than a grand

I know Eibach make thems because I has a set on my D2, but they were about .75 to an inch lower than stock so you would have to replace all four to make your car sit right.

This is how they sat with 19x8.5 LM replicas with 255/40R19s.

I also installed Eibachs due to rear springs being broken. From what I understand, trying to install stock rear springs is a real PITA. It is very difficult to get the spring clamps oriented correctly and install the spring.

With the Eibachs, I did not even need a spring compressor. I just swung the control arm down, popped in the spring and used a floor jack to position everything correctly.

Below is pic of my '97 A8 with 18's and Eibach springs. Note, the tire size is wrong and now that I have the correct 245/45/18s they fill the wells much nicer.

The ride is good, no pogo effect. I've got 3 years & 35k miles on stock shocks but I hear going Bilstein is better.

I've purchased many parts from RockAuto Parts. One part in particular was a Lemforder Front Stabilizer Bar Link. It's marked with only the "EU flag" but worked perfect on my US S8.

One thing I'd do before buying a "EU flag" only marked part is to cross reference the part number to make sure the number is the same as your part number. Also RockAuto Parts has low prices on their Lemforder parts but the shipping and handling prices on them are way to high.
