Default repalcing breather hoses and IM gaskets

<center><img src="http://web.cis.unco.edu/bacs200/isbelljm/audi/imgp0043.jpg"></center><p>
****the other pics will have to be pasted into your brouser, as i can't figure out how to post more than one, and I have to go to work*****

Well i decided to start a new post on this as once I pulled off the IM there was alot of things that needed immediate attention. turns out that it was the small breather hose on the back that was completely missing, the back two also looked like they were about to start breaking apart. the bad news is that the two IM gaskets were actually falling apart and some of them were entering the opening into the valves. if you look at the pics there is a **** load of oil and residure at the bottom and probably accounted for most of my oily smell at running temp.

So, I thing the main top pan gasket is leaking out the sides, I'd like to remove and replace the gasket. i should just be able to pull this piece off, now that the area is pretty clean, right? also there is a black plug thing on the passenger right with a wire running back, could this be the leak, as im not sure what it is? i got the web bently, but the procedures are less than detailed, heres a before and after.

Before- that plate cover in the middle is what Im talking about

after

Im currious about the thing in the midle with the wire going to the back of the block. Black cicular sensor with a bolt on top???

That should be a knock sensor.

Default Curiously, ETKA doesn't show a gasket or seal under the center cover.....

but shows a "Filler PLate" P/N 077 103 197 B. You may need to clean the interface and use a small amount of high-temp silicone sealant to fix the seepage.

I'd love to know what the heck lies beneath the cover. I can not imagine any engine with more gasket surface than the 4.2. It is no small wonder why these things leak-- there are so many opportunities!

Default The real shame

of the tragedy that is the A8 breather hoses, is that when they fail, they allow unfiltered air to enter the engine, which drastically accellerates wear.

For all the concern about what kind and how often to change the oil, the breather hoses are the real problem.

I wish I understood why Toyota and Honda don't have similar problems...

Well im about to find out, Ill take pics of any treasure i find. I plan on using some high temp RTV. It sure as heck wouldn't hurt, in fact i torqued the valve covers to specs and still leaks, then i redid the job with a little bit of rtv blue, and whoala, no leaks. i love my A8, but seroiusly, I never had anywhere near the oil leaky and weird issues with my prelude, and my A8 was pretty well cared for all around.

I definitly had some crap in near the valves, and it has no doubt probably scored the top rings. Good thing i have a warranty.

thanks for the part number.
