Replacing Upper Strut Mount in 97 A8
My suspension is making a banging noise on the right side when running over bumps at low speed. A mechanic told me it is a bad upper strut mount. Has anyone changed one of these? If so would it be probable that the upper links (front and rear) need to be replaced?
I need to replace the right tierod end also.

If you have lowering springs...you dont have to drop any lower control arms.
That bolt that holds both of the upper arms is a PITA so I'd test that out to see if you can get it out. Many forum members have either drilled it out or heated it and used penetrating lube. I just gutted it out and pounded the living sh*t out of it for like three hours. Make sure you have new ones before you commit to removing that bolt. You should be able to drop that whole unit. Remember where the little shims go in the shock tower bolts!!! I made this mistake and I think it never went back together the same. I would strongly suggest that you replace the shocks while the whole thing is apart. I made the mistake of not doing it and now I'm loathing getting it apart again to replace my shocks.

A8 doesn't have struts.
And thus no strut bearings.
There are rubber bushings on top of the shocks, but the likely hood of those causing a banging noise is low, unless you've had lowering springs or other shocks put in and that nut not tightened properly.
I'd check out the control arms, tie rod ends and sway bar links first before looking into that upper shock bushing.

bushings
I replaced mine just in case when changing controll arms.
New are about 40$.
My old once at 90k were just as good as the new once.
On the other hand, MY s80 volvo had both of these fail and so did my parents v70 volvo.
So it is worth a check. But I would check controll arms 1st as well.
