Running rich, where to start?

Running rich, where to start?
I get some soot and the exhaust smells rich when I first start the car. I'm not sure if it continues to run rich as I'm driving, because by then I'm usually inside...
I'm not getting a CEL, so I'm thinking that pulling the codes won't help -- or am I wrong?

They all run rich when they start
That's how they keep running with a cold combustion chamber.
If it goes away within a minute or two during the summer, that's normal.
