Default S8 TRANSMISSION FAILURE???

Hi everyone.

Well Monday was a bad day, my '02 S8 has been just perfect for 2 and a half years and 40,000 miles. Not one problem at all.

Until Monday morning when I powered the car down a country lane and it suddenly felt like it had slipped out of gear as it changed up. I was on the way to an airport 100 miles away and had to drive on. Every time I accelerated hard it seems to engage neutral and then 'thump', it goes into gear with a bang.

It also does it when it changes down. I got back from my trip tonight by driving gently, it will cruise Ok in 5th, it does the same thing in sport mode as well.

I just got home, but when pulling away from a standstill seems to slip on all gearchanges, unless I am very gentle on the throttle. It doesn't do it in reverse.

So, any advice please? Anybody had this happen? Is there a simple fix, or do I need a new transmission? Can I buy one from ZF? Or is it just Audi? Sorry for so many questions, I am just so gutted!!

I am in the UK as well, you guys are mostly in the USA, but please give me any advice you can, I can always ship parts over from the States if necessary.

I love the car and need to get it fixed, because I can't find anything to match it for the price!

Thanks

AlanS

Default The clutch plate cage has ripped - you will need a rebuild

The clutches are mounted in "baskets" or "cages". It has ripped/torn the metal of this basket, you need to replace the basket.

The transmission needs to be removed and rebuilt.

Sorry to hear.

Default Re: Should we be driving a certain way to avoid it?

Maybe use the manual shift, drop a gear, then gas it, so it's not trying to come down a gear under big torque?

Yes. They all use the same clutch A basket.

Thanks for the info. Any more answers would help me a lot.

1. So, in the US, any ideas how much does this cost? The echange rate between the dollar and pound is so good it may be worth me importing or sending mine over for re-con)

2. Is it just available from Audi? If not then from ZF directly, (they have their distibution centre here in Nottingham, England for the UK).

3. What is this gearbox called?, (reference number, type etc)

4. Is it a big job to remove? (I have a good workshop).

Thanks again for your help.

For everyone's info, I was not pushing the car hard when it happened. But I have really thrashed the car sometimes, it has done over 170MPH many times (mainly in Germany, where it is legal) and I floor it up to 120MPH every time I go on the motorway, so I have not been over kind, just used all of its aceleration, and it is amazing.

My last S8 was a 1997 and that had 120,000 miles on the clock when I sold it. I even took that on the track and although the transmission always thumped, it never failed like this one.

So, I just think I have been unlucky this time, (or lucky in the past).

Thanks again, I will keep posting progress.

Default The part itself is around $300, but you have to remove the tranny to get to it.

We rebuild it for $3500 (it includes all the parts and labor, TC), but the shipping would be $$$$$$.
