Default Re: The part itself is around $300, but you have to remove the tranny to get to it.

Thanks for the quick reply. (4 in the morning here, but I can't sleep, guess why?)

Is it easy to get to?

Would you suggest doing it my self, or are specialist tools needed?

there is a secondhand one available on ebay (UK), how do I find out if this is the correct one?

Default Re: What VVV he said. Unfortunately you need a rebuilt tranny.

ZF themselves, supposedly rebuilds them and sells them through a network of ZF approved shops. Common prices are $2695 or so, plus shipping, plus core charge.

You have a ZF 5HP24A (A for Audi). If you can find a good BMW rebuilder, they should be familiar with this transmission as the 5HP24 BMW variant is use on the 7-class sedans and some of the 5-class.

Default Re: That's the one.

Thanks!

having looked at your excellent transmission replacement proceedure I will not be doing this myself. I am pretty handy, but don't have the specialist tools.

i will have to find a good independant shop that has.

Mayby i will try to get a re-con from ZF and have it fitted.

thanks again.

Default Any idea on what causes? Like Chris asks below, ways to avoid? I've gotten real...

...good @ my Tip technique, I only downshift under braking (in decel situations) and it seems to take all the strain off the drivetrain. In accel situations, there's a way to modulate the throttle input to smoothen the downshift with some rev's - hard to explain that one.

I keep waiting for the inevitable. Every single time the car so much as twitches - or I imagine a twitch - I immediately cring "TRANNY!". Lame.

I keep wondering if I should change the trans fluid and filter (120k on orig) or just filter - or just leave it alone. Bueller? I figure my luck, I touch it, it'll fail a week later. Dunno.

Regardless, bummer to hear Alan - condolences - that sucks royal nads.

Default Love your driving description - sounds er familiar 8-). Course we have limiters here. Care...

...to share what she'll do ***** out, uncorked? 170+, but specifically?

We're all querious. I think the guesses are that these top out somewhere in the mid 180's.

Default Just surfing your pic poster - which rocks btw, awesome stable you got there. This...

...one cracks me the F up tho!

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/66541/img_1506.jpg">

You sir are my HERO! HAhahahahaaa, awesome.

And this ain't to shabby either!

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/66541/dscf2105.jpg">

That's too cool. Man, you put Tozo to shame there 8-) (kidding Gabor!). Course Gabor's 6spd's up to task, yours, well, d'oh.

Ummm... ***just a guess here***... all that towing = not a good thang for these here transeseses. My completely useless $0.00002. Note to self automatic D2's and towing a good mix are not! Yikes.

Love your '02, suuuuure is *RED* in there - but it's kickass nonetheless. Looks great in that color combo with those wheels and the tint. Neato!

Damn I envy you Brits and being able to have such cherry Campers, and an '80 no less (we stop @ '79 IIRC). I vow to own another heh heh. Rock on!

Sorry if I'm making light out of your situation, just trying to add some levity. I'd be heartbroken too. Good luck.
