I had a montero that was rated at 5k lbs towing limit and the boat+trailer topped in at 5400 plus gear. The transmission started going at 80k miles and we got rid of it. The armada on the other hand was built on a truck frame and was made to tow. With the 5400lb boat it would keep on going like there was nothing back there. I think the limit on it is 9100lbs so, the 5k wasnt much for it.

I have achieved 180MPH on the clock, which is probably 170, but it is too fast even for German Autobahns. We were doing 100MPH faster than other vehicles and if things go just slightly wrong, then that's it!

It was fun and the car was very stable, it is just that othr drivers are not expecting you to come up on them like a rocket. I have done the same thing in my Porsche 993 and the Audi is much more stable and less twitchy.

These are great cars.

Sorry to disagree, but this car is perfect for towing, power torque, 4 wheel drive and Audi offer a tow bar. the quoted towing capacity is very high at over 4,000Lbs.

I have towed extensively with both this car and my last S8.

The weekness is the design of the gearbox. I believe that the same geerbox is fitted to Range Rovers and they are great towing vehicles.

If i made a mistake, I enjoyed it, but it is now costing me, it was fun anyway.

I purchased a secondhand transmission today from an S8. Will now try to find a good shop to fit it.

Sorry I made a mistake.

The S8's quoted towing capacity is 2,300Kg's, that is 5,070 Lb's.

The buss and trailer weighed less than 4,500.

A fiend of mine still races Formula Vee like i used to and he uses a 1998 S8 to tow a race trailer all over Europe. the tranny is noisey, but running well, with over 140,000 miles.

I pushed the car hard and paid the price, but I would do it again. That transmission is a weak link.

But, I still love this car, it is amazing.

From now, after my montero, I will stick to towing with big my big a$$ truck that was built for it. Knowing the weakness of the A8 trans, towing definitely contributed to it IMO.
