I've talked to a few people that say they never put any sort of sealant under the cam bearing caps that are at both ends of the head. (Single Cap next to Tensioner, and double cap at other end). However, according to the factory manual is states to apply sealant.

This one for the 2.7t shows the hatched area a little better. I'm just surprised in all the "FAQ" and "HOW TO" type articles people have written, no one ever seems to mention this. THen I talked to a couple VW / Audi mechanics that didn't even know the manual called for that. Hmmm
