Default Should I be concerned that they used Dexron Trans fluid in my $2500 trans rebuild 6 months ago????

97 A8 4.2Q - I'm so frustrated! It's only been 5k miles since I had my rebuild and the trans seems to be shifting a little strange, occasionally around 20-30mph when beginning to accelerate it will drop down to a higher gear momentarily - maybe 3 or 4 instead of 2 then smoothly into 3 and so on. I usually keep the car in 3 around the city and 4 or D on the interstate.

I originally had the trans rebuilt because of the hunting problem at 117k, then warrantied again at 141K and now at 146K the trans is not as bad as it was before I had it warrantied, but the hunt is back and I'm very concerned about having Dexron in there. I use Audi Trans fluid in all my Audi's. Should I buy some Mobil 1 synthetic ATF or refill it with the original Audi mineral ATF??

Default ummmm...... Yes, I'd be concerned, if it is run-of-the mill Dexron

Dexron does not meet the requirements of LT 71141, which is the specification for fluid for these ZF transmissions.

as far as I know, the esso fluid/ audi fluid are supposed to be all the same specification. It's a synthetic fluid and works well with high heat conditions.

Default I called the shop that rebuilt the trans and...

so I drained my fluid, called the shop that rebuilt it, and they basically said that they didn't use the audi fluid, but regular dexron (not synthetic). The tech suggested that I use dexron to refill it, because dexron is what they used when they dyno tested the trans... They also used "Red Smartblend Lubguard" as an additive, which "bonds with the fluid and makes it synthetic". I'm not sure what to believe, but I'll be using Mobil 1 synthetic dexron ATF and I guess we'll see what happens.

"Bonds to the fluid and makes it synthetic".

LMAO, I love it when high-school grads try to get scientific.

Probably not.

I did try a bottle of the red Lubeguard, however and it does seem to help (but not completely). I've got 105k on a 98Q that started to hunt/thump at around 93k. I do mostly long distance freeway driving though which should be easier on the tranny.

I agree the Red Lubeguard is a good idea, but ony in conjunction with the correct fluid.
