should i panic? (for paulw)
was reading link below and realized i have exactly the high-pitched squeal paulw describes. it's been happening since i bought the car 3 months ago, and i've driven it over 5,000 miles since then.
do i have a serious problem waiting to happen?

(Not Paul but...) Don't panic but get the transmission fluid AND filter changed as soon as possible.
The longer this noise occurs, the more potential damage to the tranny pump. We suspect that the noise is cavitation due to excessive pressure drop across the filter (dirty filter), and cavitation will slowly erode the metal parts of the pump. Get this done ASAP!!

Agreed
Everytime somebody has had that problem and then changed the fluid and filter, it went away and the tranny worked soooo much better.....
I'm getting my tranny fluid and filter changed in the next couple of weeks before Mid Ohio in June....haven't done it for 40K miles and three track events....it needs it!

Make sure you're clear on the 7-8 containers of fluid.
Shop manual says FIVE .. and when they follow the shop manual, your drive home will be a noisey, grindy, clunking disaster.
There's a very specific procedure to changing the fluid, which involves cooling the transmission to a specific temperature before service.
If they drive it onto the lift hot, it won't take the proper amount. IIRC, people even suggest they let it sit on the lift to cool, since driving it up there heats the trans past the service temperature.
