Default Spark Plugs Explained for 2002 S8 (40v engine)

Ok.. I am thoroughly confused... I need to order plugs for a tuneup. I want to use Bosch +4s, but not sure which ones.

Bosch website says stock no. 7406 = Bosch spec FGR7KQE0. They also report that this is the OEM plug...They are +4 yttrium nickel electrode

Audipages says 4457 for 32 valve A8: Spec: HGR7DQP These are Platinum+4.
Most people like the platinum +4s.

ECS tuning shows two alternatives: FGR7-DQP (platinum plus 4) and FGR7-KQE0 (yttrium nickel). Other websites report these convert from the audi part. 101 905 615 A

The difference in these two plugs:
DQP vs KQE0
electrode Height.: D: 3mm from thread vs K: 4mm from thread
electrode material: P: Platinum vs E: yttrium nickel

This info can be found: http://www.boschautoparts.com/NR/rdo...ationCodes.pdf

The platinums are less expensive and seem to be of higher quality.
Looking for experiences with the 40V S8 engine...
Trying to achieve smoother idle and higher gas mileage.
Regards
B

Plugs are not magic, unless you have a wrong heat range that is causing some pinging there is not a lot of gas mileage on the table there, and any plug of the correct heat range should idle just fine. I am not a fan of the multi-prong designs, I feel those are designed to last 100k miles and I think it is unwise to leave plugs in that long so there is little to be gained in a plug that lasts more than 50k miles or so. The extra prongs might just cost more and maybe even shroud the spark.

I am not a fan either of the Bosch Platinum design where a small platinum pin electrode is embedded in the ceramic. In rare cases these have fallen out and caused damage or poor running. A look at the brochure indicates this design may have been changed a bit so maybe this won't happen again.

I'm running Champion 3071 and I'll probably have them out in 30k more miles or so. They seem fine.

Also several auto parts chains actually lifetime warranty your spark plugs. Yes, they will replace them if you bring them in dirty and with 40k miles on them, just keep your receipt.

Oh and here is a photo of a failed Bosch Plat from my friend Flash:

If you are board check out his site, he is an interesting and funny writer.
