Default Towing problem

Hey gang, I have a 2002 S8 and am getting ready to move from Atlanta to Las Vegas. The Gross Vehicle Weight listed on the door panel says 5250 lbs. When I call around to Penske and Uhaul etc., they all say thats too heavy to tow behind thier trucks. Has anyone had any luck towing the car (Its all wheel drive, so it has to be all 4 wheels off the ground, right?), or am I going to have to bite the big one and have to get it delivered. Any thoughts/suggestions would be big. thanks!

Default Re: Towing problem

5250 is the gross vehicle weight, with it fully loaded. Give them the curb weight instead, which is 4068 pounds.

Default 5250 lb. is gross weight- actual empty weight is ~4100 lb. And yes, you MUST

not tow the vehicle with any of the wheels on the ground- flatbed it.

Default My '01 S8 weighs 3850 lb with ...

No driver
1/4 fuel
Empty Trunk (no spare)

Based on what I assume are very accurate SCCA track scales.

Default if the vehicle you are towing with is a chevy one ton or larger, it can tow 10,000 lbs at least ...

assuming they have a proper hitch on the thing.

of course the more you load IN the truck, the less you can tow behind it because it would count against the trucks gross vehicle weight, so just check you numbers.

also take everything you can out of the audi, 'cause you want as much of the weight to be in the truck, between its axles as you possibly can, and less in trailer or behind the trucks rear axle

in the end, it shouldn't be a problem as long as you check your numbers

I think I wasn't totally clear on what I need to do. I need a Uhaul or a Penske truck for my couches, bed, tv, etc., and want to pull my S8 behind that moving truck. Just wondering if anyone has done it, how tough is it to drive pulling that much weight. I dont have a lot of stuff to move, so the moving truck is going to be pretty light inside. Where can you get a car weighed? I'll definitely get it to like 1/4 taknk of gas and have nothing at all in car, I'll even take the spare and subwoofers out if it makes a difference. Any thoughts are fantastic. TY!

Default I would disconnect the drive shaft from the rear diff, pull it out of the way and get a dolly under

the front. The cheapest way to transport a car.
