Tozo made me do it.
It was hard enough looking at PaulW's sparkling S8, even in overexposed shots - got me thinking that I need to treat mine w/ a little more respect. Then Tozo said PaulW's car needed to be cleaned, and that's when I called a ski racing buddy who details cars for a living in the summer months. He showed me proper procedure and left his tools and supplies for the winter months, so the S8 was the first to get the treatment.
These cars are absolutely amazing - a couple of days' work and I brought this 7-yr old D2 back to life.

Here's a pic of the Bi-Xenon's for anyone who hasn't seen them on a D2.

Even the heavily oxidized aluminum trim came back to life.

No, my dog isn't quite that fat - the door has distorted him as he was commanded to sit.

Basic procedure...
After washing and using the clay bar to clean the contaminants from the surface, it was a 5-step process w/ a dual-action PorterCable orbital buffer. My buddy uses Meguire's products, so it was 2 polishes (#150 then #80), then a pre-wax (#7) followed by 2 coats of some special polymer blend he mixed up (one type makes it shine, the other makes it last).
Using the buffer to apply everything and going right over the trim pieces cleaned them up along the way. Funny, because we initially tested many different products to shine up the aluminum and couldn't find anything that worked so we punted. When I was done, it was a side benefit.
I also taped off the rubber surfaces, my clear bra, etc. After the paint, I used ScratchX on the clear bra and front bumper.
I also used a bunch of various interior products and they work wonders. I'm not too good w/ the camera to capture it very well...

If you just went over the trim with the buffer, how did you deal with all the wax/liquad in the
cracks? I have the porter cable on my x-mas list so I will be detailing my car shortly.

The orbital polisher used in the sequence described produced the visual results seen.
I didn't try to avoid it in any way- in fact I ran the side of the buffer along the trim w/ moderate pressure and it slowly cleared up. Now we'll see if it lasts. The car originated in Boston, so I'm sure it was exposed to lots of salt. Mine had the white milky rings etched into the trim pieces.
