Re: RamanS8-Thanks
It sure does. Wish I could get a straight answer as to why the difference but now that I know the S8 acts the way I would like mine to act perhaps I'll persue after free ma period but of course that is over a year away.
I thought some Audi techs perused this site and could give some direction to resolve. Am I the only A8 owner that wants my tranny to do this?

Latest info from VAG - its a feature, hallelujah!
Latest info from Audi, from their new freebie "welcome pack", which I found in my mailbox when I got home :
"When the transmission is in Tiptronic (R) mode (if so equipped), it will automatically shift into second gear at three miles per hour unless the accelerator is depressed by at least 80 percent (this only applies to A6 2.7T, S4, A6 4.2 and A8)"
Just make sure its 80%, bubbah )
Seriously, and based on KjellA's info, methinks its probably why S8 buyers in the US pay a $1700 gas guzzler's tax [copius petrol consumption - ) ]

Never Mind - Tranny Question
I should have gone to the owners manual in the first place, just read it at lunch time. Page 65 of 1999 OM. You must be HEAVY FOOTED to enjoy 1st gear in TIP MODE. To save fuel is the answer. Not the answer I really wanted but that's the way it is. I swear however, that the A6 loaner I drove didn't act this way and held 1st gear in TIP mode without heavy footing it. My A8 goes in for service July 2nd so I test it with the A6 loaner.

The best TIP feature ...
... I agree that being able to hit the downshift button quickly twice in rapid succession, and getting two downshifts, is a great (if not the best) feature of the Tiptronic.
I don't think, though, that there's a queue that saves the 2nd downshift until it can be completed without over-revving. I don't make those two downshifts until after I've started heavy braking. I've always assumed that because TIP downshifts are relatively slow, by the time the 1st downshift is completed, car speed is always slow enough to let the 2nd downshift proceed.

This peculiar TIP behavior apparently applies only to A6 2.7T, S4, A6 4.2 and A8. So an A6 2.8 should be able to hold 1st gear in TIP mode. Was that what you got as a loaner?

YES, I am almost positive it was the normally asperated 2.8. Assume an A4 2.8 would then also hold gear #1 in TIP MODE ( without 80 % gas gussler push ) and also downshift ( below red-line ) and not be sync'd to the 3-5 mile per hour limiter. Are you researching this behavior?
