Trans overhaul underway-- update '97 A8 4.2Q
Car's been in the shop (King Transmission) since Monday, should be clompleted tomorrow (Friday). Shop sent TC out for overhaul, shop went to Audi for a few solenoids-- audi wanted to sell entire valve body ($$$$), so shop is buying components and rebuilding as needed. Estimate still firm at $2100. Cannot wait to road test it. Plenty more to follow.

Re: $2100 is a great price. Where are you located?
I am located in Chicago area. King Transmission overhauled a previous Audi trans of mine (1987 5000S 2WD) very successfully for $850-- but that was over ten years ago. I hope this one goes as well. I drove the last one nearly 100K miles after they were done with it and it was still tight as a drum.
They definitely try to save on costs when they can, as they had the pump rebuilt rather than buy one from Audi, and they send the TC out as well rather than replace it with a new one. They want to get $900 plus parts )which they surely get some markup on.
I am going to report the good bad and ugly on this rebuild after I get the car back tomorrow. I could not afford a rebuilt ZF unit nor a local shop-- good one too-- that wanted $3200 plus oil cooler to close at $3500.
I suspect if King does well, they might have a few more customers, but if not they won't see any from Audiworld. The owner gave me a car to use gratis, no additional charge, but freebies are definitely not A8 quality vehicles (1998 Contour that shakes violently at 65MPH). Can't complain, as it saves $40+/day on a rental car.
More to come

The pump is only two gears. There is nothing to rebuild on it.
My old tranny has 107K miles and there is not a single scratch on the pump. That thing is a monster.

Re: Excellent. Are they in Chicago?
Please wait for full report and a few weeks of roading to insure this is a success before plunking down any money. I don't want anyone following in my footsteps unless this is a resounding success.
