I'm seeking advice. Do I find a rebuilder? Are there prebuilt used ones? Do I give up? Has anyone done this recently in Southern California?

I've had a good couple of months with my new-to-me 2001 A8L Quattro 4.2 40V.

I added the freon-tank adapter and recharged my A/C. Worked perfect.

Bought the aluminum "crack-pipe" to repair the leaking oil-cooler. Worked perfect.

Last week, without any warning, while pulling away from a stop sign, the RPMs jumped, and with a bang it seemed to shift from 1st to 3rd? and all the letters in the transmission display on the console all lit up. Limp mode.

As I drove it home, I couldn't help thinking to myself, "at least when it's broken it can still do 60mph on the freeway." It sucks a low speeds, though.

So, I order Blauparts filter and 5 liters of transmission fluids. Slightly more than 6 liters of old black fluid drained out. Lots of metal on the magnets.

It didn't fix the problem. It seems better than ever, for the first 30 minutes of driving around. But, as soon as the engine warms up, at the next stop, it slips, and bang! Back into Limp Mode.
