transmission hunting suggestion needed
At 84K started hunting at 1200 rpm under light acceleration especially up slight grades. Also get a rare clunk on a downshift at higher rpm and speed. Should I:
a) drive until transmission "breaks"
b) rebuild TC or transmission or both
c) seek a sofware fix
d) start with a fluid change

A, nothing you will do will fixed it. also D if you want to push out the
issue alittle further and delay the rebuild. But most likely nothing will work. Even after a rebuild you will get the hunting, Good luck

Not necessarily....
I am not sure why, but many people are stating that no matter what you do the hunting issue will not go away. I don't know what I did differently, but my hunting has been gone since I rebuilt both the tranny and the TC. In fact the tranny is so smooth I almost have forgotten what it was like to have the hunting. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying by rebuilding the tranny or the TC the problem is guaranteed to go away, but I would suggest there is a possibility it will fix the problem. You just won't know until you do it either way.

I like JimR's idea...
I think everyone who has rebuilt their trans should all post replies to his thread- similar to the "trans problem/no trans problem" survey thread from much earlier.
I would like to see everyone post as much technical information as they can squeeze out of their transmission shop/mechanic as to what EXACTLY they did to it. That way, we can compile all the data, and see if there is a particular common issue, and people can take that data to their own mechanics to aid in their diagnostics/rebuild efforts.

Re: I like JimR's idea...
I dropped mine off for a rebuild this morning. I promise to report everything when I return. Inital comments from the rebuilder is that older A8 trans lacks pressure as pump ages. Low pressure = sum of all evil. Hunting, clunking at stop, thunk on downshift, etc.
I should have the car back Thursday. I've even been given a free loaner car to use suring the repair (I would not give this car to my teenage son though!).
