Default Transmission newbie

Hey Guys,

Proud new owner of a 02 S8 in mint condition and pearl white.

I don't know very much about transmissions so I thought I would ask all of you. I've noticed a very slight jerk while slowing down to a red light. It happens going from 2nd to 1st. Not sure if this is the bump or thump discussed in previous threads. It's quite slight. Going from 3rd to 4th there is a slight lag. Now I'm wondering if I am just paranoid from reading all the tranny woes from others. The previous owner was maticulous at servicing the car. The repair shop he used recomended leaving the transmission fluid change alone so it has never been done. 76K miles on it.

By the way just installed RNS-E and looks and works great!

Any help would be great!

Casey

Default Not hard to believe.. BUT

10 years and no trans service????

When you get R' done it would be nice if you took a picture and
post (the contents of the pan).

IMO don't flush it and just change the filter and fluid.

Apparently audi uses "lifetime" transmission fluid. Meaning it shouldnt need changing, however i think lifetime for Audi is somewhere around 100k miles. it wouldnt hurt to do a fluid+filter change, i've seen many do it before and they find a lot of metal shavings around the magnet.

Default Went for drive

It's still doing it... had hope that maybe it would be okay. You can feel the bump thump from 2 to 1.

Thanks for the response! Taking it in tomorrow for a change.

When I bring my camera into the car I will take pictures.

Cheers

Default Could this be a rear diff issue rather than tranny?

Could this be a rear diff issue rather than a tranny issue? Why I'm asking is becuase the rear diff did have a leak which was fixed.

It is a sign of the failing F piston. You could lose reverse soon.

Default Failing F

What if a failing F position? Don't have any issue putting it into reverse. Thanks

Went and had a tranny oil change, filter and gasket. Shifting has improved. $310 with OEM parts Vw dealer wanted $850 to do it. The shop I went to has worked on zf's many times and said don't worry about it. It will either fail or not. It still has a slight bump from 2nd to first...but the mechanic said I'm reading too much on the Internet lol
It had no filings in the pan yahoo!

Drive it a few thousand miles and drain and fill (no filter this time>).
I'd suggest the medium grade AmsOil Trans fluid except it raises the ire of a few around here. (Allison spec synthetic).

Enjoy your new 02' S8.

We use the Valvoline Maxlife synthetic atf and it works very well. Nice smooth shifts after every change. Half the price of amsoil usually. 7$ a quart.
