My '97 A8 Quattro has developed some transmission shudders (I think) and am wondering what you all may think is the problem.

A few months ago I noticed that when on flat city streets, driving at 30mph just after it has shifted into 4th gear, with very light throttle, the car seems to jerk/shake. It's not very violent, but it is noticeable. Increase a few mph or manually shift to 3rd and it seems to go away. I had thought it was a misfire and possible coil failure, but scanning with VCDS lite there are no codes. I monitored misfires and there are none.

Now when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear at medium to full throttle, there is a pronounced shudder/stutter as it shifts into 3rd gear. This happens 95% of the time. It's not nearly as pronounced with medium throttle (at around 40mph) but its there. Definitely worse when I'm passing someone and it shifts into 3rd at around 80mph. All other shifts feel fine regardless of engine load. It's not a shake the dashboard loose kind of shudder but it is very noticeable where passengers have asked what that was.

I'm wondering if the two are related or separate issues and what possible causes are.
