Thanks for all of your responses. The decision point is still about a year away, so I'll ponder the options.
One option that keeps coming to mind is a little A3 2.0 quattro w/ DSG. Maybe my heart is telling me I want to go smaller rather than larger...

You're right, so much has changed:
Rather than moving out to the suburbs and driving 16' long cars, most of my peers from college and grad school live in condos in downtown Seattle, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, and San Francisco. Two friends, both high-powered attorneys in San Francisco, are turning 30 and just getting around to buying their first car (most likely a TT convertible).
My parents by my age had a home on Long Island, 2 kids, a mortgage and a long commute to NYC for work. Oh, and a grey Ford Ganada, twin to the Mercury Monarch. Wow, from that to the A8 -- times have really changed!
