Default Vag Code Question

Hi guys, My check engine light came on today and I pulled this code with Vag. I ran a search but couldn't really find any actual results or solutions. Thanks in advance.

17604 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heater Circuit: B1 S1: Electrical Malfunction
P1196 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

Default This is where you will need a multimeter [edit]

to test resistance and continuity.

The first thing you want to do is clear the code to see if it appears again. Hopefully it doesn't and you're good to go. :-)

If it does show up however, you may want to test it before replacing it (or maybe just replace it and save yourself the hassle, as with an intermittant signal, it is probably going bad).

This is the sensor on the passenger side exhaust manifold. I believe the connector is on the firewall (follow the wire from the sensor to be sure).

here you go:

Connect the multimeter leads to terminals 1 and 2. The specified value should be between 2-10 ohms.

If no value is obtained, or not within spec, replace the sensor. Also, IIRC you can also test for a short between terminals 3 and 4. If there *is* a reading, replace the sensor.

If both tests pass, then test the socket between terminals 3 and 4.

You need the meter on the 2V range. With the ignition on, the reading should be 450mV +/- 50mV. I doubt you will need to even do this one, but the Bentley says if the correct value is not obtained, check the wiring from the sensor to the ECU. If the wiring is good, replace the ECU (haw, haw).

rockauto.com or performance-curve on ebay. I would use the splice type for sure, much cheaper.

I believe Paul put a brief post on the FAQ abt changing the pre cat sensors, how I did it when I did it. They are hard to see/get to.
