Default Vibration 1100-1300 rpm

Hi all,

I am a new guy from the block and I have a small issue. I have 1997 S8 and it runs just great. However, when gearbox switches a higher gear on a highway and rpms are between 1100-1300 the engine starts "vibrating". It feels like engine is slightly choking. After 1300 rpm there is no problem. It was in the shop for two days and they found nothing wrong. Anyone else experiencing same problem? Possible solution most welcome.

Hi,

It seems that other ppl have had same type of problem and that currently there is no solution for this "fault". Please keep me posted.

Default Are you sure it's the engine and not the transmission shuddering?

I've found that when I (rarely) get a tranny shudder it is ALWAYS at low RPM and mid torque, which sounds lust like where you are.

Default Do you have this problem also when the engine is idling around 1000 rpm? If so,

you may have a misfiring cylinder: most likely a clogged fuel injector -> put 2 bottles of Chevron fuel injector cleaner in a full gas of tank and see if the problem disappears after 2-4 days of driving.

Good luck!

Default It almost sounds as if its a "tranny hunting" issue that would

set up a vibration.

I have the same thing when the car is cold (98 A8 Q) not when it's hot. I know all my coil packs are good, but I haven't changed the plugs yet. I also have a lean mixture CEL that I can't find.

I attribute it to engine vibration, but couldn;t tell you exactly just yet.

Additional info: I testdrove this beaty today for about 30 mins. Vibration occured ONLY on 4th or 5th gear. Vibration is small but distracting enough

Since it only happens in certain gears, it still points to a possible tranny issue......

Default Check your Tyresmoke post

You'll go nuts looking for the cause of the problem like I did and even mechanics will think its the tranny but I'm sure its your coil packs or plugs. I was quoted for a new tranny at about £3500 but all it was, was a knackered lead/ plug on no. three cylinder.

Default Not necessarily...

again I'm no expert but in mine it feels sort of like a manual transmission being in to high of a gear for the rpm's. Now this MAY indicate a transmission prolem but it also MAY indicate that the DSP is taking over at a slower pace. I know that when I recoded the trans it got a lot better, but it still exists. I have a rebuilt tranny that's about 30k old.

Try resetting the DSP and driving it again. I beleive from previous posts - anyone correct me if I'm wrong - to reset the DSP you can shut the car off. Turn the key until the dash lights come on - do not start. Slowly depress the accelerator to the floor, hold 2 seconds, and slowly release the pedal. Start the car.
