What are the basic symptoms of bad control arms?
I've had a rattle in my driver's side front wheel area for quite some time. It rattles mostly over sharp bumps and my tech (not an Audi specialist, mostly MBZ and BMW) hasn't found much. I am still not sure what it is at this point. Thanks.

Sounds like bad control arms to me
It's hard to say if it's the lower straight one or upper ones.....the curved lower one usually doens't go out.
The straight lower makes creaks and moans....
The upper control arms usually make rattles and knocks.

CONTROL ARMS WARNING - Have it looked at very soon! Had the same symptoms: almost killed myself!!
I took a turn at 10 mph and heard a loud rubbing noise from the right front wheel. Stopped immediately and found the right wheel positioned against the back of the wheel well! I didn't even hit a bump when it happened.
The night before I'd been chasing a ricer at 90 mph through some curvy parts of the highway: if it had happened then, I don't know if I would have survived the consequences of the problem. I consider myself very lucky to be alive today.
Had the car towed (undriveable) to the dealer and had the upper control arms replaced for about US$1100.
I'll try to post pics before the weekend.
Now I have the moaning noise on the left: after using a stethoscope we found a bad bushing. I'll have that fixed by Dave at Northend Wrench for about US$600.

I replaced all control arms and tierod assemblies and still have that light rattle over small bumps.
Could it be something in the shocks or the shock mount? I also get a single crack noise sometimes when I turn hard, with the weight transfer going to one side to another. I replaced the sway bar links with Meyle thru bolt design as well. The other day, I pulled the wheels off to inspect the control arms, I noticed the sway bar link bushings were squished to one side due to the angle of the control arm mounts to the sway bar mounts. Is this normal? Which side are the links supposed to go...the "C" towards the front or rear of the control arms. For some reason, I don't remember how the OEM ones were, but I have them installed towards the rear. It looked like it made sense that way.

C opens toward the front
I think your C must be installed opening to the front.
My mechanic screwed up and 1st put them toward the rear. Made all bunch of noises that way.

http://www.audipages.com/Tech_Articles/susp_whls_brake_steer/CVjointoverhaul.html</a
