Default Winter Tire/Wheel questions...

Ok, for the first time after living in Minnesota for nearly 20 years, I am contemplating a set of winter tires and wheels. The stock size on the S8 is 245/45/18 and I am wondering if it is better to do a -1 configuration and how does that play into the fit, wheel clearence etc... Either way it looks like the stock size excludes the Dunlop D3's which appear to be top ranked. Suggestions and thoughts anyone?

Kidding - I adore your old ones and am really not looking forward to putting me pork Avus' back in in coming months.

Default Re: Winter Tire/Wheel questions...

Nokian Hakka R in a 245/50/18 or the RSI in a 245/40/18 would be my winter tire choice if you can't use studs. I've been using RSIs and the predecessor Qs on V8s and 200 for several winters.

Default Yep, go -1 to a 17x8 with a 225/55-17....

Tires are MUCH cheaper (almost enough to pay for the wheels) and traction in the snow last year with this setup was unreal! ...and I say this after driving quattros with snow tires for YEARS. The S8 with this set-up just seemed to be THAT much better.

You have to be somewhat careful with Caliper clearance, but I can confirm A6 4.2 wheels clear with no problem. The are other's here running stock A8 wheels (the polished 5 spokers) without any issue.

No snow down here in ATL. Relatively good roads too.

Default I'm actually looking for some OEM 16" rims and thinking of going with 215/65R

It may not look cool, but the smaller contact patch will get me grip and the higher profile tire will buffer my suspension from the potholes. Have you ever seen the video of the guy climbing the ski ramp with an A8. Check out how narrow the tires are for the final climb. I'm also, however, considering stock 17" rims and tires. If anyone wants to unload their 16's (or 17's) let me know.

Default Crossed my mind... :-) I thought, now why did I get rid of those?

I'll probably find some OEM wheels to go with the snows...
