Zumkopf, you are not alone...
Sure enough, that thumping I have was not my control arms, but a <a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a8/msgs/169941.phtml">broken spring</a> (drivers side)! D'oh! Must be these stellar Chicago roads (pothole city).
<b>Professor Waterloo</b>, do you still have the H&R procedure by chance? I looked on Audipages and the title <font color="red">"H&R Coil Over Suspension for the A8/S8"</font> is there, but no link. I suppose one could STFA for the thread...

Never did a procedure, it easy to replace the front spring
Just drop the straight control arm, unbolt the top and bottom part of the strut assembly, then get some spring compressors and go to work.

Thanks. I have been
snooping around a bit and and I see there's almost an entire procedure on your pic poster ;-). I looked at the Bentley as well and see it's no big whoop. I have the compressor ordered and just about to pull the trigger on the H&R suspension. I figure I might as well replace everything as it will probably be on its way out shortly.

How long have you had them like that?
I'm on the fence whether I should replace the suspension right away or can I push it off until I have more time? As stated below, I'm thinking of going the H&R route as I would like to lower the car and a lot of fellas on the forum work themselves into a lather saying how great they are. A perfect excuse to give them a whirl!

*sheepish* well they have been for about a year now I think ... I was thinking eibachs eventualy.
I live in Vermont, so I am leary of going too stiff or too low. Also to be fair the $240 price is a bit more palateable than $1500 ...

Yep. I was just shot down on my H&R idea :-(
The boss (wife) says no go at the price. So, it looks like a stock replacement for now. I wonder if <b>A8CT's</b> spring would work on my 98. Hmmm....

I guess I ought to have posted my spring compressor question up here.
Will any old spring compressor work? Which compressor did you order? I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to springs.

You and me both...
This is one of those jobs I managed to avoid the past 16 years of working on my cars. I looked at the type Paul used, but I don't have an impact wrench/air compressor, plus that type of compressor freaks me out. So, I opted for this <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Troy-1-Ton-Hydraulic-Coil-Strut-Spring-Compressor-Kit_W0QQitemZ310077482839QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item3 10077482839&_trkparms=39%3A1%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318 &_trksid=p4506.c0.m245">hydraulic compressor</a> off of eBay. I hope and pray it's not made in China, but if it is, I hope it doesn't let that spring unload on me!! :-/
